How to Increase Your Domain Authority in 6 Steps

Ah the sought-after homepage location. Everyone wants it - from beginner bloggers to full-fledged multinational corporations.

When it comes to SEO there is no greater victory than getting your website or blog to rank high in the SERPs. This is why both marketers and developers put so much effort into optimizing their content and websites.

But beyond keyword backlinks and mobile friendliness there’s an often overlooked metric: Domain Authority (DA).

Before we learn how to improve your DA, let's see what this scale is and why you should care about it.

What is domain authority (DA)?

Domain Authority is a term coined by Moz the go-to authority in SEO. The site indicator is from 0 to 100. As you might have guessed the higher your DA the better as you're most likely to get more high-quality traffic and rank higher.

Your domain authority is a great way to evaluate the results of your SEO efforts. If your website is in its infancy keep an eye on this metric and see how it has grown in time. You can check your DA using the open site of Moz.

Your DA is calculated by considering many factors such as backlinks to your website and their quality. Fortunately there are a few things you can do to influence this metric.

6 Steps to Improve Domain Authority

First let's be clear about one thing: don't set out to get a 100 DA. Google Wikipedia and Facebook are just three examples of sites. himself has only DA from 91. Your chances of reaching 100 are slim at best. As Moz explained it uses a logarithmic scale and a proprietary algorithm to derive the DA score. So it's important to have true, realistic expectations.

If your DA is now below 20 you can easily boost it. If it is already higher you will have to do a lot of work to keep increasing it.

Let's look at these six steps in detail:

1. Get technical about your SEO

No matter how Google's algorithm changes the technical aspects of SEO it will always be the cornerstone of SEO and increasing domain authority. First you need to plan your URL structure and optimize your robots.txt

Once these look flawless improve your navigability site structure meta tags breadcrumbs title tags keywords alt tags and more. Add as many words as possible to your blog post.

2. Create quality content

If you're a regular here you'll know that I write a lot about the importance of high-quality content. This is the best strategy for attracting visitors to new leads and converting readers into paying customers.

Of course it is the basis for improving your DA.

Here’s why: Premium content is linkable content. If you write great content people will link to it. You will get new backlinks - one of the most important factors in improving your DA.

In order to publish high-quality content on your website you need:

Do thorough research and cite your sources - this adds credibility to everything you publish.

Write long blog posts - try not to post less than 1000 words. Ideally you should aim for over 2000 words per article.

Package your article with examples and actionable items like these.

Use photo infographics and video content - they are great for engaging your audience.

The most important thing is to be honest with yourself: do you have the skills and time to write high-quality content? If not it's better to hire SEO copywriters than to randomly post low-quality articles when you have time.

3. Assess the quality of your backlinks

Ask any SEO expert about backlinks and they'll tell you they're a gold mine but.. (there's always a but!). Just like Google Moz's algorithm it also penalizes bad or untrustworthy backlinks for spam.

Your link profile (the sum of the links returning to your site) needs to be as diverse as possible to get good DA and PR. There are many factors that can determine whether a link is toxic or not. You can use SEMrush's tools to analyze your link profile.

As a rule of thumb avoid link exchanges ("If you link to me I'll link to you") - no authority site will provide this you're looking for authority sites to link to you. Also make sure you don't spam forums and other blogs by adding irrelevant comments your link.

4. Don’t Forget Internal Linking

Each Wikipedia article has a large number of links to other Wikipedia articles and it has a DA of 100. Internal linking reduces bounce rates by keeping users engaged and reading more content.

Most importantly internal linking helps Google bots easily crawl your content and signal to them that an article is relevant. Ideally whenever you link to an article you should use its keyword as a text anchor.

If you want to make sure your internal links serve their purpose make each one follow one.

5. Get quality links

Instead of scam links like "If you link to me I'll link to you" mentioned above go legit and get well-deserved links. You can guest post on other blogs or platforms or use Q&A sites like Quora.

Not only can Q&A sites improve your DA score but they can really help people. What's more they're a goldmine for finding new content ideas to connect with professionals in your industry and even get some leads.

6. Be patient

If you read Moz's description of domain authority you'll understand that all new sites start with DA. It doesn't matter if you have hundreds of long articles from the start. Your DA is still one.

However if your site is three to four years old and you continue to publish fresh content the Moz algorithm works in your favor and you will see your DA increase in no time.

Watch how your domain authority changes

The best way to increase your DA and get relevant traffic from the people you end up turning into paying customers is to add relevant evergreen and premium content. Do this and monitor your DA to see how your content strategy affects it. Don't expect big changes overnight though.
